Introduction

It is often stated that the emergence of Information Society and Knowledge society have given impetus to service sector and quality characteristics are sought in the services offered to the customers

The concept of best practices is not new to the libraries, the Five Laws of Library Science endowed with the philosophy of Best practices and the Catalogue Code for instance may be considered as one of the best practices in LIS.

Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science describes best practices as follows

​

”In the application of theory to real life situations, procedures that, when properly, applied consistently yield superior results and are therefore used as reference points in evaluation of the effectiveness of alternative methods of accomplishing the same task. Best practices are identified by examining empirical evidence of success”

Need for best practices in Library:

Best practices are developed in the library for following purpose. 

​

  • To execute the five laws of library science.

  • To magnetize & meet the user demand.

  • To maximize the utilization of library.

  • To identify the needs of the users.

  • To market library services and products.

  1. Conducting Book display on different occasions.
  2. Free Internet Facility.
  3. User Orientation Program.
  4. Displaying new arrivals.
  5. Newspapers Clipping Service.
  6. Regular Library Committee meetings.
  7. Formation of Readers Club.
  8. SMS alert Service.
  9. Question papers set of previous examination.
  10. Library Calendar of Activity & Events.
  11. Intercom facility for communication among departments.
  12. Library Newsletter -  Quarterly Publication .
  13. Separate Library Website -updating and maintaining dynamic Library Website.
  14. Inclusion of sufficient information about the library in the college prospectus.
